# Measuring Success: How We Assess Impact and Growth at the Hockaday Institute for Social Impact

 November 05, 2026

### Introduction

At the Hockaday Institute for Social Impact, our mission is to empower students to become leaders who live lives of purpose and impact. We believe that meaningful engagement with the community is an essential part of education. However, like any educational endeavor, the effectiveness of our programs must be measured to ensure that we are truly making a difference. In this blog, I’ll share how we assess the success of our service-learning initiatives and the impact they have on both our students and the community.

### The Challenge of Measuring Social Impact

Quantifying the impact of service-learning programs can be challenging. Unlike traditional academic subjects, where success is often measured through grades and test scores, service-learning involves personal growth, community engagement, and the development of soft skills like empathy, collaboration, and leadership. These outcomes are harder to capture with conventional assessment tools.

To overcome this challenge, we use a combination of qualitative and quantitative metrics to evaluate the success of our programs. This approach allows us to capture the full scope of our impact—both the tangible changes in our community and the intangible growth in our students.

### Our Multi-Layered Assessment Approach

#### 1. Student Reflection and Self-Assessment

Reflection is a cornerstone of our assessment strategy. After every service-learning project, students participate in structured reflection activities. These can include journaling, group discussions, or multimedia presentations. We encourage students to think critically about their experiences, the skills they developed, and the challenges they faced.

We also use self-assessment tools to help students evaluate their growth in key areas such as empathy, leadership, and problem-solving. For example, in our Biology, Impact and the Zoo course, students use a detailed rubric to assess their own progress in building empathy and applying scientific knowledge to real-world problems. This self-assessment process not only helps us gauge the effectiveness of our programs but also empowers students to take ownership of their learning.

#### 2. Community Feedback and Partner Surveys

Our community partners are invaluable in helping us measure the impact of our work. After every project, we gather feedback from these partners through surveys and interviews. They provide insights into how our students' efforts have benefited their organizations and the people they serve.

For instance, in our partnership with local elementary schools, we use feedback from teachers and administrators to assess the impact of our tutoring and mentorship programs on student achievement and engagement. This external validation is crucial in ensuring that our service projects are truly meeting community needs and creating positive change.

#### 3. Quantitative Data and Impact Metrics

While qualitative feedback is important, we also rely on quantitative data to measure our success. Using platforms like MobileServe, we track the number of service hours completed by our students, the types of projects they engage in, and the number of community members impacted. We also have them check a box to indicate which of our five outcomes they felt like they developed while participating in social impact.

For example, in our partnership with a local zoo, we track the number of educational workshops conducted, the attendance at these events, and any changes in community awareness or behavior related to conservation efforts. In our literacy programs, we measure improvements in reading levels among students who receive tutoring from our volunteers.

By combining these metrics with qualitative assessments, we can build a comprehensive picture of our program’s impact.

#### 4. Academic Integration and Alternative Assessments

We believe that service-learning should be integrated into the academic curriculum wherever possible. In many of our courses, students complete alternative assessments that go beyond traditional exams. These assessments evaluate not only academic knowledge but also soft skills and social impact.

For instance, in our Spanish in the Community course, students are assessed on their ability to collaborate with community members, create bilingual educational materials, and develop solutions to address community needs. This holistic approach ensures that our students are not just learning for the sake of learning but are applying their knowledge to create real-world change.

### Celebrating Success and Continuous Improvement

Celebrating our successes is a key part of building a culture of service and impact at Hockaday. We regularly showcase student projects at assemblies, in school newsletters, and on social media. These celebrations not only recognize the hard work of our students but also inspire others to get involved.

However, measuring success is not just about celebrating; it’s also about continuous improvement. We use the data and feedback we collect to refine our programs and ensure that we are meeting the needs of both our students and the community. Each year, we review our assessment data to identify areas for growth and set new goals for the future.

### Conclusion

At the Hockaday Institute for Social Impact, we are committed to creating meaningful, sustainable change. Measuring the success of our service-learning programs is an ongoing process that involves thoughtful reflection, community feedback, and rigorous data collection. By continuously assessing and improving our efforts, we strive to create a lasting impact on our students and the world around them.
