It’s the season of giving, and many organizations are looking for volunteers to give their time to a needy cause. And as a Louisville-based startup with a mission to encourage service, we want to make it as easy as possible for volunteers to find ways to give back locally. Check out these 10 events where you can make a difference on our community!
One-Time Volunteer Opportunities in Louisville this December
Now – 12/9/16: Christmas Decorating at the Cabbage Patch Settlement House. 1413 S. 6th St. Any day, contact for time. Volunteers are needed to decorate Christmas trees and string the Patch buildings with lights. Must be at least 21 and able to climb a 12-ft ladder.
12/3/16 - 12/11/16: Picture Your Pets with Santa. Feeders Supply in Shephardsville. 187 Adam Shepherd Pkwy. Various times on Saturday and Sunday for two weekends. Saving Sunny Inc. and The Kentucky Humane Society are hosting professional pet portraits with Santa to raise funds to support Saving Sunny's mission to build a more compassionate community for animals and their humans. Volunteers are needed as greeters, animal handlers, cashiers, thumb drive runners, and dressing up as Santa.
12/10/16: Community-wide Clothing Distribution. Central High School Football Stadium, 319 S. 15th Street. 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. The 15th District PTA Clothing Assistance Program needs volunteers to assist the fourth annual Take What You Can Tote event, which provides needy families the chance to shop for gently used clothing and accessories. Volunteers will stock and sort items, assist families, provide a welcoming atmosphere, and more.
Now - 12/11/16: Angel Tree Adoption Centers: Follow the link for available times and locations. “Angels” list a child and one or two items they wish for this Christmas. Volunteers will assist people in area locations by explaining the program, helping them choose an angel, and sorting supplies.
12/14/16: Flashes of Hope at Kosair Children’s Hospital. 231 E. Chestnut St. 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. This Kids Cancer Alliance Initiative is a chance for families staying at the hospital to get their portrait taken by a professional photographer. Volunteers are needed to assist photographers, set up, and tear down. Must be at least 18.
12/14 & 12/16/16: Americana's 25th annual Winter Festival. 4801 Southside Dr. Americana Community Center is hosting more than 300 children and their families at this year's festival where they'll take family portraits, play games, decorate cookies, and visit with Santa. Volunteers are needed to help with set-up on the 14th and at the festival on the 16th.
Now - 12/23/16: Holiday Party: Bridgehaven, Inc., 950 S. 1st St. Volunteer groups are needed to help prepare hot meals for up to 150 people with severe mental illnesses. Volunteer groups are also needed to coordinate donations of winter ware and household items.
12/27/16: Meals & More at Kosair Children’s Hospital. 1100 E. Market St. 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Make the day of a hospital-bound family by helping to prepare and serve a meal for them. Must be at least 18.
12/28/16 - 12/30/16: Youth Winter Camp. Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, 715 W. Main St. Morning shift: 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Afternoon shift: 12:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Volunteers are needed for KMAC’s annual winter camp for children ages 6-11. Volunteers will assist museum educators with artistic projects. Must be at least 16.
12/31/16: Lou Year's Eve at KMAC. Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, 715 W. Main St. 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Volunteers are needed to assist families with artistic projects at Louisville’s Lou Year’s Eve event. Must be at least 16.
Collectively, these opportunities offer so many ways to volunteer in Louisville, and they serve hundreds of thousands of needy people. Just think, YOU can be one of the people who helps make this season a little brighter for so many who need it!
